The Fallout television series may soon take viewers beyond the locations already familiar to players of the games.
Bethesda Game Studios director and Fallout executive producer Todd Howard has teased that Season 3 will explore new parts of the Wasteland, including communities, cultures and factions that have not been fully shown in the main games.
The comments come after the Season 2 finale pointed The Ghoul toward Colorado, setting up a journey that could expand the franchise’s map in an important way.
Todd Howard Teases New Areas of the Wasteland
Howard said the team wants each season of Fallout to visit new places, following the same approach used across the video game series.
Rather than simply placing familiar characters in another ruined city, the creators want to examine how people live in different parts of post-apocalyptic America.
That could include:
- New settlements and communities
- Unfamiliar political or military factions
- Different methods of surviving in the Wasteland
- Regional cultures shaped by life after the nuclear war
- New conflicts that are not connected to earlier games
Howard did not reveal any faction names, characters or major plot details. His comments are a broad tease of the direction planned for the next season.
Is Fallout Season 3 Going to Colorado?
The Fallout Season 2 finale provides the clearest clue about where the story could go next.
The Ghoul, also known as Cooper Howard, discovers that his wife Barb and daughter Janey are no longer inside the cryogenic chambers where he expected to find them. Instead, he finds a postcard pointing toward Colorado and the Rocky Mountains.
This sets up a new stage in his search for his family.
However, Colorado may not be the only location featured in Season 3. Howard suggested that the journey from New Vegas could take the characters through other places before they reach their destination.
Walton Goggins, who plays The Ghoul, has also avoided confirming exactly where his character will end up.
Other Locations Could Appear During the Journey
The route from Nevada to Colorado gives the series plenty of room to introduce new locations.
Season 3 could show abandoned towns, isolated settlements or territories controlled by groups that have never appeared on screen. However, no specific states or cities beyond the Colorado tease have been officially confirmed.
Locations such as Utah, Arizona or New Mexico may appear in fan theories because of their geography, but they should not be treated as confirmed settings.
The uncertainty gives the creators freedom to surprise viewers without being limited to places already established in the games.
New Factions Could Expand Fallout’s Lore
Factions have always played an important role in the Fallout universe.
Groups such as the Brotherhood of Steel, the New California Republic, the Enclave and Caesar’s Legion have their own beliefs, political goals and ideas about rebuilding society.
A new region would allow Season 3 to introduce communities shaped by different challenges.
Some settlements may have built stable systems of government. Others could be controlled by military groups, religious organisations, raiders or local leaders.
These new factions could create fresh allies and enemies for Lucy, Maximus and The Ghoul while expanding the history of the Wasteland.

How Season 3 Can Stay Connected to the Games
Introducing original locations does not mean the show will abandon established Fallout lore.
The television series takes place within the same wider continuity as the games. This allows its writers to create new stories while respecting the events, technology and history already associated with the franchise.
Geography has also given each Fallout game a distinct identity.
Fallout 3 explored the Capital Wasteland, Fallout: New Vegas focused on the Mojave, Fallout 4 visited the Commonwealth, and Fallout 76 moved to Appalachia.
Season 3 can follow the same idea by giving a new region its own people, dangers and political struggles.
Colorado has appeared in parts of wider Fallout lore, but it has not been deeply explored as the main setting of a modern Fallout game. That gives the television series considerable freedom to develop it.

Prime Video has officially renewed Fallout for a third season, and filming began in Los Angeles in June 2026.
Several main cast members are expected to return, including Ella Purnell as Lucy, Aaron Moten as Maximus and Walton Goggins as The Ghoul.
The Season 2 finale also confirms that The Ghoul’s search for Barb and Janey is now pointing toward Colorado.
